The artist I researched is Tony Oursler. I really enjoy the videos of his installation at Magasin 3 called "Caricature". I first became interested in Oursler during my time with Emily Silver in Sculpture, where we were required to incorporate video into a sculpture piece.
In an interview concerning his work, Oursler describes the awesome power of video with regards to its mimicry of human thought processes. He explains the difference between television's use of this incredible tool and what artists try to do. He says that television has latched onto an editing method that closely resembled the normal human thought and because it works so well, television has essentially ceased to push beyond that self constructed boundary. Oursler says that video artist strive for just the opposite; to create new videos that challenge the normal constructions. He cites television, specifically MTV, as one of his greatest influences.
Oursler is a graduate of the California Institute for the Arts and lives in New York City.
