Oliver Herring

Oliver Herring _ Legacy

I chose Oliver Herring to post about, not because he's a more recent video artist, but because his themes and ideas are more relevant. Art 21 describes Oliver Herring's work in this manner:

"Herring’s videos have a dreamlike stream-of-consciousness quality; each progresses towards a finale that is unexpected or unpredictable. Embracing chance and chance encounters, his videos and performances liberate participants to explore aspects of their personalities through art in a way that would otherwise probably be impossible."

His participants aren't the only people influenced to explore aspects of their personality, Oliver Herring's viewers also have a chance to explore their personality and personalities of people within the video. Oliver Herring uses stop motion to animate his video Legacy. The actors/actresses are volunteers "taken off the street" and do not generate a fake atmosphere.

This video in particular seems to touch upon memory and the impact that other people have around us. In the beginning of the video, arms of the people remain on screen longer than the rest of the body to form a chain like structure. Continuing further into the video, Oliver Herring depicts two people grasping to each other onto of two ladders. I felt the piece portrayed a sense of structure and support within humanity; something no one wants without.
